Title: My Heart is So Full of You Author: Valerie Gibson (valeriegibson@gmail.com) Disclaimer: They aren't mine, but if wishing made it so... Rating: PG-13 Category: Utter Fluff Timeline: Future Fic Archiving: Sure, but I'd like to know where. Feedback: Would be fantastic since I'm new at this. Constructive criticism is encouraged. Just be gentle. A/N: I didn't have this Beta'ed. I'm still very new to writing FF and I'm a little bashful about it. All mistakes are mine and mine only. A/N 2: The title was pirated directly from Bradley Whitford himself during his 2001 Emmy acceptance speech. It made me cry and I've wanted to use it in a fic. It is also stolen from a song by Jennifer Garner (No, not THAT Jennifer Garner). *********************************************************************** It was 4 o'clock in the afternoon and Josh found himself feeling at a bit of a loss. There wasn't anything that needed immediate attention since everyone is DC was primping for the many inauguration balls. Josh was sitting in Leo's chair deep in reflective thought. Carol walked into his office shuffling some papers, "The First Lady's Chief of Staff is on her way over." She said. "You mean my girlfriend, Donna?" Josh smiled. "Yeah." she said. "I just like saying her title. It's cool." "Yeah." He chuckled. "Hi. You busy?" Donnas asked as she paused at the door. "Not really. I though we'd do more actual work today, but the President is already in the residence and Carol keeps telling me I have to get ready. I don't think she's realized that I can slip into my phone booth and spin real fast until my tux magically appears on my body." "What is it with men and superheroes, anyway? It's like they're options, not just fantasies." Donna said as she crossed the office and sat down on the couch. She looked around the office and realized it was still pretty much the same as when Leo occupied it. Apparently CJ hadn't changed it while she was here. Donna thought it was going to be strange to be in the White House without the usual suspects. The transition team had decided to keep a lot of the staff on board with some exceptions. Ed and Larry had both been approached to continue with the Santos Administration. Ed had stayed on in operations, but Larry begged off choosing to go to the DNC with the hope of spending more time with his kids. Still, no Leo, CJ, Margaret, even Toby. Not the same. Josh saw her taking in the office and sighed. "I don't know how to be in this office without him." "You'll be fine. You'll be different than Leo. Just like President Santos is different from President Bartlet. Not better or worse, just different. You've gotten him into office. You can do this, too." Her complete faith in him was miraculous. Their relationship was still relatively new. At least this version of it was. They had only been together for about 3 1/2 months. It didn't take long for them to fall into a whole new rhythm, but Josh still couldn't help but wait for the other shoe to drop. "Okay", he said. "I guess I'd better change. Are you going home, or did you bring your gown with you?" he asked. "I have it with me. I was just going to change in my office-" she started as she stood up to leave. "I'll come, too -" he started to grab his garment bag. "No you will not. I will not defile the East Wing on my first day and you know that's always how that scenario pans out. You change here, I'll change in my office, and I will see you in a little while." She smiled at him and left, shutting the door on her way out. Josh changed into his tux and opened the door to check with Carol on the schedule for the evening. She was gone, but he saw Sam standing nearby. "Hey, Sam. You all ready?" "Yeah, Lauren is meeting me here. She and Donna planned on the four of us riding together tonight," "Oh. The President and First Lady..." "On their own. We'll meet up with them at each ball, but we have our very own limo with our very own champagne. We're going to enjoy ourselves tonight." "I thought Congress was invited to these things" "Well, except for that part." Just then Donna strode in wearing a royal blue evening gown that made Josh speechless. Her hair was pulled back in a loose bun and she was putting on her last earring as she walked up to him. "You're beautiful", he said softly. "Thanks", she said, kissing him gently. "I see you're not completely ready." "The phone booth doesn't do it as well as you." Josh smirked as he held up his bow tie. Sam watched their interaction as he had a thousand times. Still, it was different. Josh was less edgy and Donna was more sure of herself. There was less chaos and he wondered if this was the new world order. He had been around them a lot since they finally got their collective act together, but he never tired of seeing fate act itself out. When they got to the first stop, the Lone Star Ball, Sam and Lauren went off to start schmoozing and Josh led Donna straight to the dance floor. He held her close with his hand on the small of her back and she gently teased the back of his neck as they swayed to the music. They both relished the idea that they could be a couple so honestly and publicly. Every so often, someone would dance by with their congratulations, and both would accept them graciously. During a lull, Josh asked Donna, "Can you believe this? We did it" "And not without a lot of help and good luck. He's going to be great." Donna noted with a nod to the President and First Lady. "He's the real thing. I found my guy. Just like Leo said" "You're thinking about him a lot today, aren't you?" "Hard not to. I miss him." "He would be so proud of you, Josh. I love you very much, you know." "I know." He smiled. "I don't know why some days." "Me neither. But I do. With my whole heart, I do." "Me too. And I'm so proud of you." "Thank you." She said. She kissed him lightly and then nestled her cheek on his shoulder as the song changed. Josh pulled Donna even closer to him and breathed her in. "My heart is so full of you." "There is no room for anything more." She replied.
